MVP is not a 3rd option, it's your BEST option

Lee Kuan Yew once said that Singapore deserves a first world government as well as a first world opposition. But what does it mean to be “first world”?

Does that mean the party needs to be constituted of requires a certain kind of educated professionals? Who perhaps require a certain kind of prior career success or private enrichment? Who perhaps profess a certain kind of politics and are mainly pre-occupied with certain kinds of recognised issues? Who talk and walk and dress a certain way?

While the Workers’ Party reject the label of “PAP Lite”, their current preference for professional elites and rather sanitised brand of politics seems to imply otherwise. Having that option is great, but we cannot let that be the only alternative.

In the interest of “not splitting the vote”, democracies overseas – most noticeably the USA, have devolved into stagnant 2 party systems. There, voters are often constrained to the lesser of 2 evils, and are given no choice for change in the formal democracy. That is until unhappiness necessitates something as disruptive as the Trump Administration.

A population is ultimately distributed along a bell curve. If “first world” simply means an opposition constituted of elite professionals, who will speak for the issues that may be invisible, unpopular or even taboo amongst the professionals? Just because an opinion is politically unsanitary, does not mean it can be ignored.

A option is not valuable because it is globally respectable or because it is articulated in fancy terms. No matter how ugly or contentious, it is valuable only because it can improve Singaporean lives. And so long as our democracy has options, we can move forward.

Our Strategy

  • Source actionable policy ideas from discussions with Singaporean Contributors
  • Run with these ideas formally via the democratic process
  • Force the PAP and the WP to consider these ideas seriously:
    • If they accept them, we have moved the conversation forward
    • If they ignore them, we give Singaporeans an option to vote for these ideas at the ballot

We are still a small team and are looking for policy suggestions to add value to the conversation.
